Vision
The big picture in the minds of Black United Fund (BUF) movement founders back in the 1960s and 1970s was of a people employing
its creative genius to provide for its members, individually and collectively, to survive and make progress. Around the
same time as the BUF movement began, the Seven Principles or Nguzo Saba came into being. Those principles: Unity, Self-determination,
Cooperative Economics, Collective Work and Responsibility, Purpose, Creativity and Faith, articulated what the vision for
the Black United Fund movement should look like—in terms of both actions and outcomes. Mission
The point of entry of the Black United Fund movement into the vision imbued in these principles is that of philanthropy. The
mission is to create, support and sustain African American cultural, economic, educational and social institutions through
grassroots fund-raising and using those funds to create community profit by stimulating and strengthening a vibrant African
American nonprofit sector. The Black United Fund of Sacramento Valley, Inc. (BUFSV), has contributed to this mission
and vision in the Sacramento Valley since 1992.
