Growing Our Own Creating Community through Nonprofit Development

Level I workshops

Since 2007, the Black United Fund has conducted quarterly workshops to help civic-minded individuals to establish and maintain small, grassroots nonprofit organizations in primarily underserved, economically challenged neighborhoods and communities. We have two levels of workshops. Level I workshops are for people in the very beginning stages of starting their organization. Here are the upcoming Level I workshops.

    This workshop covers board development do's and don'ts, board responsibilities, challenges, the
    importance of board training, as well as benefits and rewards of having a strong board.

    All workshops take place at the Black United Fund Office 4104 44th Street, Sacramento, CA 95820.

    There is a $5 materials fee payable at the door for each of these workshops.
    Advance registration is required because of limited seating.

    The mission of the Growing Our Own Workshops, levels 1 and 2 is to build, nurture, and help sustain grassroots nonprofit organizations. The goals are to: stimulate new start-up nonprofits in diverse and disadvantaged communities; stimulate micro-nonprofits to serve local neighborhoods; promote practices necessary to move grassroots organizations from the start-up phase to long-term sustainability; raise awareness about the economic potential of a strong nonprofit sector in economically disadvantaged communities, and foster collaboration and partnership among grassroots nonprofit organizations.

Level 2 workshops

Level 2 workshops are for people operating small nonprofits and are ready to begin growing their organizations. The first level 2 workshop for 2015 will introduce participants to the State of California charitable campaign and Combined Federal Campaign. These governmental programs provide a mechanism for employees to contribute through payroll deduction to worthy nonprofit organizations. Successfully getting into the campaigns can provide a steady source of income for a small nonprofit.
